Over 240 Edo farmers trained on climate-resilient practices

On Monday, May 15, 2023, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) instructed no fewer than 240 farmers in Edo State on climate resilient techniques for producing rice, tomatoes, and maize. The state capital of Benin City, Edo State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, collaborated in the training.

Mr. Wellington Omoragbon, the Edo Director of FMARD, opened the program by stating that its goal was to teach farmers wise agricultural methods so they could lessen the impact of climate change on crop output. In the presence of Mr. Sunny Omoike, a Director in the ministry, Omoragbon declared that the rising temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, droughts, floods, and increased acidity had a negative impact on agricultural output in the state.

He pointed out that smart agricultural strategies that can increase production include effective water management, intelligent tillage, healthy soil practices, crop mixes, the use of weather forecasting technologies, and premium planting supplies and types.

About 4,000 farmers from various agricultural value chains are expected to be touched by the training, he claims.

The Edo State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Sunday Erhunmwonsere, stated that the training will increase farmers’ production in the three crop value chains.

Erhunmwonsere stated that the training included new developments in the production of rice, maize, and tomatoes and that the ministry was producing seed kinds that could endure climate change.
